This painting started as a series of rough sketches captured on an iPad near Sunshine Tree Terrace in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom. The spot fuels my inspiration (and my addiction to the I Lava You Float). I laid in the final version of Captain Long John Silver with pencil lines and dark acrylic wash for the undervalue layer on gessoed art paper. Then, added transparent washes of color acrylics, sharp and bright. The classic Disney movie is such a “treasure”—I feel like i could hear Robert Newton’s pirate snarl in the smirk I painted, all grit and glee. The painted pirate landed very much the way I wanted, pinning the captain’s charm in vivid hues—a throwback to the heroes and shivers of child-hood adventures.
