Rapunzel's Tower Painting by Ronn Stern

Rapunzel’s Tower

Sipping coffee from Gaston’s Tavern, I settled at the tables in the Tangled area of Magic Kingdom, sketching roughs for Rapunzel’s Tower on my iPad, the cool, crisp air sharpening the day under a clear sky. I snapped reference shots of the tower with my Nikon D7200, trying my best to catch its angles just right. Back in my studio, I worked the digital painting, brushing in a dreamy glow that carried a twinge of sadness—Rapunzel’s gone from this place—yet a quiet joy that she’s free, no longer caged. The colors wove a fairy-tale haze, pulling you into the fantasy, with a whisper of those wide-eyed wonders and fleeting fears from way back when.

Some photos from the reference-trip to Magic Kingdom. It was a beautiful day (a bit cold) and I was able to gather the pics and even do a preliminary group of sketches from an idyllic spot near Walt Disney World’s best restrooms (if you know, you know).
